Mark "Slim" Hatfield
Owner, Hatfield Creative Arts
Prior to entering college my mother had a set of business cards printed for me. Under my name, the cards stated that I was an "Artist, Illustrator and Raconteur Extraordinaire" - which was my mom's way of celebrating my ability to tell a good story.
After graduating Paier College of Art in Hamden, CT with a BFA in illustration, I began work in the promotional marketing industry. I began working on staff as an Associate Art Director, advanced to Art Director, and then Senior Art Director. During this time I gained invaluable experience with client presentations, new business pitches, concept development, marketing strategies & tactics, and the entire print production process. I also had the opportunity to art direct several celebrity photoshoots.
After several years I decided to go out on my own as a freelance Art Director/Designer/Illustrator. I named my freelance business “Mac Monkey” as whimsical salute to the Macintosh computer platform - the industry standard for graphic design. After working with some of the best agencies and creative teams in the promotional marketing industry, I have now expanded my artistic endeavors and services with Hatfield Creative Arts.
Not much has changed since I received that first set of business cards. I'm still passionate about using my skills in creative ways, and I still love to tell a good story. In regard to advertising and promotional marketing, I've found that these two passions often need to be intertwined. The ability to effectively communicate your client's message in a creative and compelling "story" is never easy, but it can yield amazing results when done properly.
When a new project comes in, I invest as much energy as I can into considering how best to approach whatever challenges are presented, and I NEVER settle for just "good enough". I know my clients wouldn't want to work with anyone who would settle for that either.
